I got tired of paying monthly fees after I stopped playing WoW. I'm now waiting for Guild Wars 2

I played for a week and seriously started disliked how railroaded the game was and the lack of options as far as races go. They should have skipped classes and went with a skill based system so people could make what they wanted instead of being tied into some absolutes, a class based mmo is ancient tech and design and its far past time to break out of that mold. My favorite parts of the RPG and the universe arent even there. I cant be strictly a starfighter pilot if I want. I cant be a droid engineer and surround myself with pet droids. Plus they skipped out on many of the iconic races like Mon Cals and Sullestans, they made up BS races that Star wars has never been known for like Cyborgs and they brought in Chiss which were not revealed to the greater galaxy until after Return of the Jedi. They should have went with a sand box and not a theme park in design. Graphix are nice, controls are rather iffy, they should have melded more of a FPS to the game instead of the half ass way they did it, and that might have even saved the game for me. It just seems extremely incomplete at this time.

These are all your opinions and are as valid as anyone but for the sake of the thread allow me to offer a counter argument.

How many hours? Do you honestly think you have seen what ToR is with a week of play under your belt?

I agree that it would be nice if there were more playable races, I believe that is something that will be added in the future. First update is adding a new planet and a new flashpoint so It seems content will not be a problem.

I like class based games. Thats why I play D&D and other such class based games. SW-G tried to break out of the mold and where is it now? dead.

Chiss are a neat race that has a place in ToR. Mon cals are in, you kill one on the black talon. Why anyone would want to play one is beyond me though. Sullestans make a minor appearance in a late game space mission but lets be honest. other than riding shot gun to lando in jedi what are sullestans known for? Were either of the species you mentioned power players in the time of revan? I dont think so.

The game is mostly theme park with some sand box elements. again this is your preference so thats ok for you but does not in any way mean the game is not good, just means you dont like it. Adding FPS elements to MMORPGs has never worked out. The fact is SW-ToR is not mechanically much different from any other mmo. It is the evolving story line and the setting that make it worth playing.

Graphix are nice and very forgiving considering.
Controls are no different than every other popular mmo out there.
Sw ToR launched more complete than any other MMo in history.

I am interested to know what you are basing your comparisons on.

I have played since beta. Have a max level sith warrior, I PvP often and have maxxed a craft. I love the game.

Had to find that article my relative found about the game being so bad, and here it is..
http://auditorydepredation.wordpress.com/2012/01/12/star-wars-the-old-republic-a-hate-crime-against-humanity/
Yeah I took the time to read the whole thing, and here are my favorite quotes from the rant.

Part 9: "...if I blew three hundred million dollars on an unpolished turd I’d do everything in my power to make sure it was a turd with wide appeal too."

Part 11: "If you have a peice of toast and some silly string you should be able to fashion a computer capable of running this game.

End part: "New content patch apparently will have zombies. FUCKING ZOMBIES! Even Star Wars Galaxies waited until it was nearly dead to resort to zombies. There are only two reasons to have zombies in your game. Either it’s A) about zombies or B) a game featuring a gun that summons a land shark."

Charles to be honest the game wasnt that bad. I think it would have worked just as well as a single payer game like Skyrim and likely I would have liked it more if it did but oh well. My views on it are they skipped a ton of what Star Wars is about, concentrated on the Jedi/Sith too much, made up new races instead of using the ones Star Wars is known for(thankfully they did skip ewoks and Gungans). Chiss do not exist in the SW universe until after Return of the Jedi. There are actually books that talk about how they make their appearance and Thrawn is an absolute but totally realistic badass when he shows up. I am pretty good with SW races, unless those green guys are in the Clone Wars series, they were made up. SO why not include Rodians(Greedo, Han shot first guy)? It is essentially WoW in space although I think the controls arent as fluid, mainly because they made it clicky like an FPS but kept targetting and other functions as a mouse over instead of a reticle. We have been begging and pleading for a new Tie-Fighter or X-wing sim, this would have been the ideal place to put one and would have easily had the fan base to support the whole game just on star fighter piloting alone.

Tabula Rosa was a badass FPS/MMO unfortunately the designer wanted to concentrate all of his studios resources on his new game, so they had an amazing end of game event where the designers let everyone return and fight for earth and he pulled the plug.

Skyrim is a great example of a classless/FPS game, it wouldnt be hard to turn it into an mmo given the proper resources to do it. I know Eve has its issues but character advancement would be amazing in a fantasy game with the hundreds of skills available. Everyone might have the same basic stuff but as characters aged, they would go off on their own path because it is the only skill based(and PVP) based mmo that does not have a best build. Best build is what you want to do with it.

Planetfall 2 is coming out in the near future, and apparently so is a Battletech mmo(but we are talking 2013 or later). 40K online might leave the gates at some point although it will be all about space marines and how cool they are. Doubt it will be classless and likely they will stick with the same boring class based system.

Battlefield 3 got it right with classes. Engineers are perhaps a bit OP, but all classes have cool stuff, but in addition all classes can do most things. Drive, use various assault rifles, grenades etc. They then have their specialist stuff and each weapon goes up in rank with upgrades too. This would be a great example of the combat side of a FPS/mmo.

Edit: After reading that long review I have to agree with most of it. I wouldnt give it a 0/10 but maybe a 4/5 out of 10.

One problem I have with the review more than the rest. Why is designing a game that will run on older computers a bad thing?

The game is as similar to wow as wow was to daoc and daoc was to eq. Just so you guys know WoW was not the first mmo. sometimes it seems like you guys forget that, especially when you compare everything to wow.

Chiss did not magically spring into existance after the battle of Yavin. The old republic is canon so like it or not Chiss are allied with the sith empire.

Rodians are in the game as npc I killed a ton of them.

The star wars trilogy and the three prequels are not what ToR is about, ToR happens 3000 yrs before luke blew up the death star in a time that is much more open and that I personally like more.

Basically KotoR > the trilogy

If you like KotoR you will like ToR.

Thats the problem. Chiss were an undiscovered species with only a little contact with the galaxy. The Emperor knew about them but no one else did. They came out of the Unknown Regions and were an independent civilization that had the firepower to resist the Empire so the Emperor instead of taking them over decided to secretly trade and keep quiet, something the Chiss who didnt want anything to do with anyone else found to be a suitable solution. Grand Admiral Thrawn is the first Chiss the galaxy met.

I have no problem with them making a game suitable for everyone's computer. Thats a good thing in my book as well.

Rodians are not characters which is a shame, instead they put in silly cyborgs with with barely any cosmetic difference and zero difference game wise to humans. They should have just left them out and gave more cosmetic options for humans.

Heres another goofy thing, why cant every race be every class? The force would appear in every race out there except a select few like Hutts and Yrrmgyrls(a sloth-like lizard creature that makes a null force bubble). Every race can fly ships although some like the Duros and Sullestans are more naturals at it than others so there isnt any reason that any race shouldnt be able to be a smuggler. Any yahoo can shoot a gun so mercs and bounty hunters should be available for any race. About the only race that would be limited really would be the Imperial Agent due to the huge racial bias of the Empire.

Since all it is is cosmetics, there should easily have been mass numbers of playable races that are common throughout the galaxy. It doesnt matter that they exist in game, if you cant play them than each one is an opportunity missed and a fail. I hate limits.

The only MMO I would consider playing in the near future is the 40k one slated for early 2013.
Aftermath can be calculated.
