Superman #701 Quick Review
A Coliseum Recommended Read
I was in a karaoke bar in Memphis with DC Publisher Dan Didio a bunch of months ago. Rest assured, I was not on stage, nor did or do I ever plan to be warbling into a microphone to the oldies. We sat at the bar instead and he told me that writer J. Michael Straczynski was writing a story in which Superman walks across America to get back in touch with his roots. Yep, I thought it was a dumb idea. Then again, Straczynski was the creative vision behind putting Asgard, Thor’s home, above a field in the Midwest, which also seemed pretty dumb. Since that worked, it should come as no surprise that the story in Superman 701 also works. Not only are the roots of who Superman is explored but also why anyone with or without powers can be a hero. Happily, it goes a bit deeper than the cheesy “You can be a hero, too, Timmy!” of the 70’s TV genre.

I liked the idea that Superman considers himself to be a regular guy and not a hero. I don’t think that would work with most heroes but this is Superman, the guy who grew up on Midwest values, and sensibilities that tend to understate even the grandest of things. So it works. After more than 70 years of 4-10 Superman stories a month we have something quite different. It’s worth checking out.

- Phil

Lady Deadpool #1 One-Shot

$3.99 / Marvel
story by Mary H.K. Choi / art by Kenneth Lashley
From the stunning sadism that brought you an entire brood of Deadpool droogs comes the chromosomal clusterhiccup that is Lady Deadpool. Agile, armed, and a howling she-lunatic, this recluse is robbed of the only thing she adores more than binge eating: cable TV. In an America ravaged by colossal debt and careening unemployment, the loss of the glowing idiot box is more than this girl can take. Why won’t the government do anything? How is General America complicit? Was the genocide of all sitcom writers necessary? Should Wanda ransack the loins of a hot activist? Probably. 'Cause this Merc with a Mouth packs lipgloss. And it's sticky.

Time Masters: Vanishing Point #1 (of 6)

$2.99 / DC Comics
story by Dan Jurgens / art by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund "The Search for Batman" starts here! Vanishing Point – where time ends – is tearing itself apart, and one of the keys to keeping reality from being torn asunder is finding exactly where Bruce Wayne is in the time stream! Rip Hunter puts together a high-powered band of Time Masters to travel throughout history in search of the World's Greatest Detective, but can even the combined might and skill of Superman, Green Lantern and Booster Gold help the Time Master pinpoint where Batman went at the end of FINAL CRISIS?

Blackest Night: Rise of the Black Lanterns Hardcover

$24.99 / DC Comics
story by Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka & more / art by Ryan Sook, Denys Cowan & more
Seven classic DCU titles — THE ATOM AND HAWKMAN, THE QUESTION, PHANTOM STRANGER, STARMAN, THE POWER OF SHAZAM!, CATWOMAN and WEIRD WESTERN TALES — are resurrected alongside GREEN ARROW #30 and ADVENTURE COMICS #7 in this BLACKEST NIGHT tie-in hardcover!

True Blood #1 (of 6)

$3.99 / IDW Publishing
story by Alan Ball, David Tischman & Mariah Huehner / art by David Messina
Blood and sex mix on a hot rainy night at Merlotte's, when Sookie and her friends are trapped by a vengeful spirit who feeds on shame. People die and dirty secrets are revealed as Sookie, Bill, Eric, Sam, Tara, Jason, and Lafayette and are all coerced to dig deep and tell painful memories from their past—those things we all have locked within us that we never tell another living soul! Bon Temps, Louisiana has never been stranger, or more twisted, in a story co-plotted by TRUE BLOOD series creator Alan Ball, with a script by David Tischman (Bite Club) and Mariah Huehner, and lush art by David Messina (Star Trek: Countdown). First Issue special: an exclusive pullout gatefold poster by David Messina!

Scott Pilgrim Volume 6 Graphic Novel

$11.99 / Oni Press
story and art by Brian Lee O'Malley
It's finally here! Six years and almost one-thousand pages have all led to this epic finale! With six of Ramona's seven evil exes dispatched, it should be time for Scott Pilgrim to face Gideon Graves, the biggest and baddest of her former beaus. But didn't Ramona take off at the end of Book 5? Shouldn't that let Scott off the hook? Maybe it should, maybe it shouldn't, but one thing is for certain — all of this has been building to Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour!
