Superman #701 Quick Review
A Coliseum Recommended Read
I was in a karaoke bar in Memphis with DC Publisher Dan Didio a bunch of months ago. Rest assured, I was not on stage, nor did or do I ever plan to be warbling into a microphone to the oldies. We sat at the bar instead and he told me that writer J. Michael Straczynski was writing a story in which Superman walks across America to get back in touch with his roots. Yep, I thought it was a dumb idea. Then again, Straczynski was the creative vision behind putting Asgard, Thor’s home, above a field in the Midwest, which also seemed pretty dumb. Since that worked, it should come as no surprise that the story in Superman 701 also works. Not only are the roots of who Superman is explored but also why anyone with or without powers can be a hero. Happily, it goes a bit deeper than the cheesy “You can be a hero, too, Timmy!” of the 70’s TV genre.
I liked the idea that Superman considers himself to be a regular guy and not a hero. I don’t think that would work with most heroes but this is Superman, the guy who grew up on Midwest values, and sensibilities that tend to understate even the grandest of things. So it works. After more than 70 years of 4-10 Superman stories a month we have something quite different. It’s worth checking out.
